Membership

Membership of a Lions Club is by invitation.  Typically new members are drawn from friends, relations, work colleagues and neighbours.

Front cover of Who are the Lions leaflet

Lions is always welcoming to like- minded people who would like to join the club after an introductory process. Leaflets such as ‘Who are the Lions?’ inform prospective members.

Anyone can apply to be considered for membership. The membership committee deals with such matters and the chairman of the committee will make contact, explain how the club functions and the commitments expected of a potential new member. Admission is ultimately by democratic vote of all members. Club policy is to rank a member’s priorities as family first, work second and Lions third – the club is therefore not too demanding of a member’s time.

Lions derive tremendous satisfaction and fun from being a member.  Pushing a disabled person round Harpenden in a wheelchair or ferrying people to disabled swimming sessions are immensely rewarding.  Raising charitable funds is also very fulfilling with events such as bookshops, raffling Easter Eggs, Highland Gathering, dances and concerts.  But it is not all too serious – a social committee organises members’ events such as the Christmas Party (held in January!), annual Charter Night anniversary dinner dance, four Ladies’ and Guests nights per annum and an annual barbecue to celebrate the change pf President every June.  Each year the social committee arranges different events such as walks combined with a pub lunch, trips such as a visit to Bletchley Park and a tour of Tower Bridge and cycle rides to name a few.

If you are interested in enquiring about membership, please e-mail the Club Secretary or telephone the dedicated message service line: 0845 833 7426.
