Harpenden Highland Gathering 2007

The 2007 Harpenden Highland Gathering was held on Sunday 8th July in Rothamsted Park, Harpenden.

The preceding weather had been dreadful but on the day the sun shone and the crowds swarmed to the park. There were many new attractions for 2007. The 1st Battalion 42nd Highland Regiment dressed in 1815 uniforms and with firing muskets were spectacular.

The Somme Battlefield Pipe Band from France honoured the sacrifices made by the Scots in the First World War.

Other new attractions included the Kangaroos gymnastics display team and Circus Whiz - an interactive circus skills workshop and the Luton Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Charities to benefit from the day include Keech Cottage Children's Hospice and the Lions 'Gift for Living' scheme which is helping to rebuild the infrastructure of former Yugoslavia. Other beneficiaries include local youth charities.

Building on Success

Last year 10,000 people passed through the gates over the course of the day. For 2007 it will be even bigger. The event is claimed to be the the largest Highland Gathering in the UK outside Scotland. Harpenden Lions Club describes it as 'a fun day out for all the family with a Scottish flavour'. It raises funds for many deserving causes.

New for 2007

A major addition this year is a re-enactment by the 42nd Highland Regiment of Foot (1815) - The Black Watch, who will dress in the uniforms of 1815 and simulate battle scenes of the past - complete with pipes and muskets! A great spectacle.

All the traditional attractions will be there: pipe bands, highland dancing, marching, heavy events and competitions.

There will be an especially warm welcome for the Somme Battlefield Pipe Band - all the way from France! The band promotes the sacrifices made by the Scots in the First World War.

Other new attractions for 2007 include Circus Whiz and the Kangaroos Gymnastics Display Team. Circus Whiz is an interactive circus skills workshop where young and old can try out juggling, stilt walking, plate spinning and many more circus talents. The Luton Youth Jazz Orchestra will also be a first timer, playing their numbers with great professionalism and enjoyment. Scottish dancing competitions and displays will be held throughout the day.

It doesn't stop there. there will be crafters' stalls, a climbing wall, falconry display, classic car display, commercial stalls and a funfair. Catering will be significantly improved with the introduction of a 'Food Court', so there will be plenty of variety - plus of course a licenced bar.

Supported Charities

Charities to benefit from the day include the Keech Cottage Children's Hospice and the Lions 'Gift for Living' scheme which is helping to rebuild the infrastructure of former Yugoslavia. Other beneficiaries include local youth charities.

Thanks and Acknowledgements

A charity event such as the Highland Gathering would not be possible without generous donations of time, talent and funds from many sources. Advertisers who appear in the programme have also helped considerably by underwriting some of the advance costs.

In particular we have had assistance from St Albans & Harpenden Review newspaper who are the major sponsors, DOR-2-DOR for publicity leaflet distribution and Postscript Print & Design who printed the leaflets.

Harpenden Lions Club will be repeating the popular Charity Golf Day again this year on Thursday 27th September (note change of date) at Aldwickbury Park Golf Club, Harpenden.

In recent years the event has grown to become a firm favourite for both social and corporate entertainment. It has raised many thousands of pounds for charities; this year the money raised will go to Riding for the Disabled.

The day concludes with a three course dinner at 7:00 pm, presentation of prizes and a raffle.

Local companies are again invited to send a team of four, or individuals can organise a team. Cost is £250 per team of four, and individuals can join in too at a cost of £70 per person. Friends, partners and colleagues are welcome at the dinner. Cost for dinner alone is £30.

Handicap certificates will not be required although the maximum handicap allowed will be 24.
