This concert will present a variety of works, opening with one musician and adding to the ensemble one by one. The evening will begin with a solo performance from Tom Poster, who will then be joined by clarinettist Alice Gledhill to play Baermann's lyrical Adagio. Before the interval Tom Poster will join the string players of the Pellizon Piano Trio (Guy Button, violin and Sophie Gledhill, cello), an established ensemble of Instrumental Award Holders from Cambridge University, to perform Rachmaninov's beautiful Trio Elégiaque and Piazzola's fiery Primavera Porteña (Spring) from the Argentine composer's tango-influenced Four Seasons.

The second half will open with a short string quartet work, Crisantemi (Chrysanthemums) by Puccini played by the four string principals of the Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra: Chang-Ho Yoon, Guy Button, Rosalind Ventris and Sophie Gledhill. The evening will end in style with the popular and well-loved Mozart Clarinet Quintet and promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable occasion.

Recording From Last Year's Concert (MP3 Format)

Alice Gledhill (clarinet) and Sophie Gledhill (cello), joined Tom Poster (piano) for a performance of the Trio in B flat major, Op. 11 by Beethoven.

Towersey Foundation

The Towersey Foundation is a unique charity providing music therapy in palliative care for people living with life-threatening illnesses. Music therapy is valued for the beneficial effect it has in a variety of illnesses and disabilities. Professionals working in hospices and special schools are increasingly appreciating what a powerful tool music therapy is in the total care of their patients. www.towerseyfoundation.org.uk.

The Pasque Hospice wanted to include music therapy as part of its care in 1991 when the children's hospice service was started. This was achieved through a unique collaborative working arrangement between the Towersey Foundation, Jessie's Fund and the Pasque Charity. The Pasque Charity music therapy service is now regarded as one of the leading proponents and experts in the provision of music therapy in palliative care. www.pasque.org

Music therapy session

There is also growing demand for the Music on Wheels music therapist to support children in the community - at school for example. This presents an opportunity for the music therapy service to be more efficient because many of the children who use the hospice attend the same school. Music therapy can therefore be provided to a number of children in the community in one location. Many children and families are now opting for care in their own homes or on an "outpatient" basis.

The project is currently being managed by the Towersey Foundation in conjunction with the Pasque Charity music therapy service. The project covers to Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes. The Towersey Foundation's input will be for one year, thereafter the project will be handed over to the hospice in its entirety.
