Performers

Pictured above are students from The Purcell School and their accompanist for the evening, Daniel King Smith (far right), after their hugely enjoyable 'Summer Classics' concert at Rothamsted Manor.

Original Announcement

Harpenden Lions Club is again hosting a charity music evening showcasing talented young musicians.

This popular annual event, now in its 19th year, features a concert of solo and chamber music by students from the internationally acclaimed Purcell School for Young Musicians. It will be held at the wonderful venue of the Great Drawing Room in Rothamsted Manor in Harpenden on Saturday 12 June 2010 at 7:30pm.

The varied programme, billed as 'Summer Classics', includes compositions from Beethoven, Bach, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn. The soloists will be playing piano, flute and cello, additionally there will be a snare drum soloist playing a suite from Siegfried Fink which promises to be highly innovative and entertaining. It will be a highly entertaining evening for all.

This year there is an added bonus. Ticket holders are being encouraged to have a picnic in the gardens of Rothamsted Manor from 6.00pm onwards. The gardens are a hidden gem in Harpenden and this is a great opportunity for residents to club together for a picnic on the lawn followed by the concert.

Original Announcement

The Snowdon Horseshoe

Snowdon 500 Challenge will take place over the weekend 22/23 May 2010. A team of four members of Harpenden Lions Club will be climbing Snowdon to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre.

The team members are Paul Nield, Tony Usher, Chris Edwards and Bengie Walden. The team name is 'Harpenden Lions 254' - 254 is the sum of their ages!

The team will be aiming to raise at least £2,000 for the Prostate Cancer Research Centre. In 2009 the club witnessed one of the Club members experiencing prostate cancer and it is not a happy sight. He is better now but we have learned how poorly funded this form of cancer research is. It is the most prevalent form of cancer which afflicts men.

Please sponsor the team on this adventure. The cause is an urgent and valuable one, and the four are determined to climb the mountain in good order.

Please visit the Justgiving site to make a gift online.

If you have any questions e-mail team member Bengie or call the Harpenden Lions helpline 0845 833 7426

Harpenden Rocks - Original Announcement of the Event

Harpenden Rocks is a charity event with a difference! The gig promises "a mind-blowing musical melange of sizzling blues, massive rock and acoustic classics", from outstanding local artist Anjali and brilliant local bands the Low Lamps and the Gigantics. The night also features a Grand Raffle, a ‘rock photo booth’ (complete with rock wigs and blow up guitars!) and your host the luscious Lady Laura, Princess of Rock!

Harpenden Rocks

Local Chinese takeaway Lots of Rice are also pledging their support by serving Chinese food on the night under the guise of "Harpenden Woks", and donating 50% of the price of food sales to the event. Everyone involved is giving their time for free in order to make as much cash as possible for these great local causes. All profits from the event will be split equally between the A-T Society and the Harpenden Lions, to fund worthy initiatives locally, nationally and internationally.

The Low Lamps The Gigantics Anjali

Event co-organiser and local musician Anjali will kick start the evening with an acoustic set of her quirky original tunes and covers of classic cheese. The Gigantics will be ‘turning it up to eleven’ with an energetic guitar-driven set of their huge home-grown hard-rocking floor-fillers, reminiscent of rock legends Feeder and early Jam. Later, headliners The Low Lamps, whose set will feature special guest harmonica player "Hot Gravel", will be rocking the Legion with their unique blend of blues, country and funk, mixing songs by Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and early Fleetwood Mac with their own haunting lyrical blues-tinged originals.

So come on down and get Harpenden rocking for charity from 8 pm at the Royal British Legion (Leyton Road, Harpenden) on Saturday 13th March 2010!

Supported Charity

AT

Ataxia-Telangiectasia (“A-T”) is a rare, neurodegenerative and progressive condition which starts in early childhood causing severe disability and premature death. It affects many parts of the body robbing the child of his/her independence. A wheelchair is needed usually by the age of ten. The A-T Society (charity reg. no. 1105528) was set up by a couple living in Harpenden, Vincent and Maureen Poupard, whose two children were diagnosed with A-T. It provides a family support worker and counsellor; organises events for A-T sufferers and their families; provides support grants to help purchase expensive equipment such as wheelchairs; funds research into the disease; runs two management clinics to improve quality of life and life expectancy; and provides information and raises awareness through a range of leaflets on various aspects of this complex disease. The A-T Society is still based in Harpenden at the Rothamsted Research Centre, and Maureen and Vincent, who are still living in Harpenden, are actively involved with the work of the charity to this day.
