In the weeks before Easter, Harpenden Lions Club provides local pubs, clubs and workplaces with giant chocolate Easter eggs which are raffled for charitable causes. This year there will be over 30 eggs in pubs in Harpenden and surrounding villages of Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Kimpton, Flamstead and Markyate. In 2014 £2,500 net was raised for the local Talking Newspaper Service. For 2015 the beneficiary was the Keech children’s hospice, for which £2850 was achieved.
The photograph shows David Kinley, landlord of the Inn on the Green, Harpenden, with the pub’s Easter Egg in 2013, who will again host an egg this year.
This year’s main beneficiary will be the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted which covers our whole area. It provides care and support for adults with life-limiting illness, and their families. Care is given in the Hospice, in their well-being spring centre and at their home. We aim to raise enough to pay for seven day’s total care for one patient in their inpatient unit.
