[Top] Harpenden Lions Musical EventsHarpenden Lions has established itself locally as a presenter of varied and popular music events and as supporters of young musicians. Over the last 30 years classical concerts organised by Harpenden Lions have generated substantial sums for a wide variety of deserving charities including music related ones. For the 2010/2011 season we have two major events:
Past events have covered a wide range from an orchestral concert by a lake, chamber music, 60s nights and a rock music evening. The club also sponsors young musicians to enter the Lions European Musical Competition. In 2010 the Harpenden Lions accomplished the following:
Lions European Musical Competition 2010 / 2011Competition entry for 2010/11 is now closed. Details for the 2011 / 2012 competition to be announced. The instrument will be the cello. ![]() Lions European Musical Competition is held annually for young solo musicians resident in Europe. Each year a different instrument is chosen for the three stage competition which determines the musician who will represent their county in a grand final. The 2010 / 2011 competition will feature the oboe and the final will be held in Maastricht - all expenses paid! The competition is open to young musicians up to the age of 23. It is one of the very few competitions to provide opportunities for this age group to have access to Europe. There are substantial prizes. Every Lions Club may sponsor one musician; Harpenden Lions Club competes in 'multiple district 105' - British Isles and Ireland.
Background to the Competition![]() The competition began in 1991; the UK and Ireland Lions area (Multiple District 105) first participated in 2004. The selected instrument that year was the clarinet, and Alice Gledhill was nominated by Harpenden Lions. She won the Multiple District competition held in Bournemouth and then competed in the European final in Rome in October 2004. Since 2004 Harpenden Lions Club has sponsored a contestant most years with varying levels of success. All expenses are paid by the sponsoring club or by Lions centrally. The club is now seeking a talented young oboist to represent the club, and hopefully the country, in 2011. It is a great opportunity to compete in an international competition with expenses paid, and generous prize money. It can be a real boost to a young musician's career in music. The Purcell SchoolHarpenden Lions club is pleased to be associated with the young students at the The Purcell School who play at the Rothamsted Manor events. The Purcell School is Britain's oldest specialist school for talented young musicians. In 2003 the School was awarded the UNESCO Mozart Gold Medal in recognition of its unique contribution to music, education and international culture. The School is funded largely by the Government's Music and Dance Scheme which, along with its own scholarship funds, ensures that all pupils join the School on the strength of their musical potential irrespective of their parents' ability to pay.
