Harpenden Lions annual street collection raises funds for "Message in a Bottle"Harpenden Lions has been carrying out the annual Christmas street collection for over twenty years. This year the Lions will again be seen at various locations in Harpenden from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm on Saturday 18th December. Beneficiary of the funds this year will be the "Message in a Bottle" scheme. The frail, elderly, infirm, special needs and anyone living alone can have vital medical and personal information stored in a bottle so that the emergency services can easily find the information. MORE INFORMATION The "Message in a Bottle" was started by a police officer in Perth in 1997. Since then many have benefited from having a bottle containing vital data in their fridge. The scheme has been taken up energetically by Lions and other Clubs around the UK. The frail, elderly, infirm, special needs and anyone living alone can have an accident at any time. The emergency and social Services need immediate access to information such as the GP, medication, allergies, next of kin, and dependents, pets to be fed etc. A short form is filled in and the confidential information is stored in a small plastic bottle in the fridge - a secure and easily identified location. A label on the inside of front door of the house and another on the fridge draw the attention of emergency services to its existence. A kit, consisting of the bottle with a form and a pair of stickers, is supplied free by the Clubs participating in the Scheme, financed by sponsorship and donations. Hence the collection. Having a bottle containing this key information reduces anxiety and can be a real life saver in case of emergency. When the funds have been raised, and the emergency services notified, Harpenden Lions Club will start to distribute the bottles and forms to local people. [Top] Help for 25,000 Local Children Local Lions Clubs in Berkhamsted, Dunstable, Harpenden, Hemel Hempstead, Luton, St Albans, Stevenage, Tring, & Watford join to give children a start in education. Children aged three to five years at nursery, pre-school and reception classes are going through a critical stage in their education. A vitally important subject, often known as life skills, prepares them for their time at school and for the rest of their lives. The formal title of the subject, "personal, social and emotional development" includes listening, learning, communicating, self-confidence as well as working and playing together. TACADE, a charity specialising in personal, social and health education, produces training material for this period of children's education known as Early Years - but the training packs need to be paid for and the teachers need specialist training to make best use of them. Nine local Lions Clubs have collected £20,000 to donate manuals with training to 400 schools in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire - 100 in Luton & Dunstable and 300 in Hertfordshire. Half the funds have been raised by Lions own fund raising. The remaining £10,000 came from the generosity of 5 local partner donors. Sixteen training sessions have been delivered jointly by TACADE and local Early Years advisers from the Education Authorities, with Lions organising the gatherings. This is a unique and significant partnership between Lions, TACADE, Early Years teams of three local authorities, and generous donors to ensure that our children receive essential training and education at a critical phase of their lives.
