Harpenden Lions Club have set a target to raise £2,500 for St Albans and District Foodbank by Sunday 10th May. The Foodbank provides emergency food for people in crisis. The funds are urgently needed to meet the demand for help in our area sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic. Examples of the current extra call on resources include children on free school meals currently being unable to access those meals and adults having no income due to the delay in receiving benefits. Harpenden and St Albans Lions Clubs have donated £500 to the Foodbank from grants received from the community fund of the Lions Clubs Foundation of the British Isles.
John Mulholland, a trustee of the Foodbank, said: ‘We are extremely grateful to Harpenden and St Albans Lions Clubs for thinking of us at this time of crisis. In the last few weeks the call on our help has skyrocketed – in the week starting 6th April we fed as many people as we normally do in a month and indications are that the demand is unlikely to abate for some time. Your donations will assist in purchasing essential items for distribution to those in need and helping with the costs incurred in keeping the foodbank operational’.
