Our Team.

Meet our leadership team.

We are all volunteers but with an eclectic array of skills and knowledge that meld to make us a fun and effective group that make a difference to the lives of those living in Harpenden and the surrounding area, as well as nationally and internationally.

We are always looking for people to help us achieve this and would love to hear from you if you're interested.

President & Trustee

Mark Deacon

Background

I joined Harpenden Lions Club in 1991 when my father-in-law was President of Bath Lions Club and I could see from him how I could make use of my spare time to serve the local community as well as raise funds for national and global issues whilst also meeting new friends in and around Harpenden.

I am currently serving my second term as President (having done it before in 2004/5) and have been Secretary four times during my thirty-four years with the Club. I am also the Chairman of the Luton Air Cadets, a Governor at a local Primary School and an Assistant Church Warden.

I am married to Hilary and have two grown-up sons. I spent my working life in the airline industry in Operations, looking after Flight Planning, Flight Management Systems and Air Traffic Management which involved a lot of travel (especially to Brussels!) Having retired in 2019 I am now trying to ‘plug the gaps’ to see as much of the globe as I can – and for those places I cannot visit I always have my Flight Simulator!

Treasurer & Trustee

Andrew Godden

Background

I was one of the founding members of Harpenden Lions Club back in 1981 when I was the youngest member. Until I retired, I combined serving the community with commuting five days a week into London where I worked in the banking industry. My wife, Diana, and I raised our three daughters in Harpenden and know they benefited hugely by helping with service activities such as wheelchair pushes for those with cerebral palsy. I relax by playing golf and bridge, watching a variety of sports and tending my allotment. I also enjoy foreign travel.

Secretary & Trustee

Jenny Vestal

Background

Jenny joined the Harpenden Lions Club 2 years ago, having moved back to Harpenden after 11 years of living in North Carolina, and has recently taken on the role of Club Secretary.

Her career in Pharmacy and medicines development and regulation across Europe and the USA included working on novel treatments for rare diseases, various forms of cancer and malaria. While still providing consultancy to companies developing novel treatments, Jenny now undertakes as much voluntary service as she can, primarily with Harpenden Lions Club but also supports other organisations.

Any spare time is taken up with 3 young grandchildren, trying to keep the garden under control and acting as Company Secretary and Director of her local neighbourhood Management Company, while fostering community spirit among the residents.

Membership Chair & Trustee

James Penn

Background

James has been a member of the Harpenden Lions Club since 2016. He is currently responsible for the membership activities in the club and previously has been the Treasurer, and more recently, Club President.

With a background in wealth management and advice, James currently runs his own business from home.

He is married to Niki, and they have two boys, both of whom were educated at St. Georges.

When James is not working, or volunteering for the Harpenden Lions, he is a member of a local pop / rock band "Sunny Side Up" where he plays the keyboards.

Trustee

Roger Fox

Background

Following a long career that started with Quality Control in a brewery, and working on various IT projects in UK, Europe, and Far East, Roger joined Lions a few years ago as one of his Retirement activities.  He has enjoyed Lion activities such as Tree and Bulb planting with local council, helping with various tin shakes, and (of course) the Harpenden Highland Gathering.  Through Lions, he has also worked to support other local organisations such as Classics on the Common, and the British Legion Poppy Appeal. He was invited to become a Trustee relatively recently.
