A Morning Walk, A Scenic Ride, and a Well‑Earned Lunch
There’s something about a crisp Hertfordshire morning that brings out the best in the Harpenden Lions — and today’s social outing proved exactly that. Whether on two wheels or two feet, members set off from Wheathampstead to enjoy a relaxed morning of fresh air, good company, and the kind of local scenery that reminds us why we love living here.
A huge thank you to Nick and Dave Price, whose planning and gentle herding ensured both the walkers and cyclists found their way along the lanes and footpaths towards our shared destination: The Cross Keys at Gustard Wood.
A Tale of Two Groups — One Shared Spirit
The walkers enjoyed a steady route from Wheathampstead, taking in the old station — a favourite local landmark and a perfect photo stop. Meanwhile, the cyclists looped through the quiet lanes, spinning past hedgerows and early‑morning dog walkers, making the most of the rolling terrain.
Despite taking different paths, both groups arrived at The Cross Keys with impeccable timing (a minor miracle in itself). The pub’s welcoming atmosphere, hearty food, and a well‑earned drink made for a relaxed and cheerful lunch.
The photos from the day tell the story beautifully:
Wheathampstead Station, bathed in soft morning light, with Lions gathering before setting off
Lunch at The Cross Keys, full of smiles, chatter, and that unmistakable post‑exercise glow
Community, Camaraderie, and a Bit of Adventure
Events like this remind us what the Harpenden Lions do best — bringing people together. It wasn’t about speed, distance, or ticking off miles. It was about connection, fresh air, and enjoying the countryside that sits right on our doorstep.
Here’s to many more mornings like this one — and to Nick and Dave for making this one happen.
